Bruns,
Curator, Independence Seaport Museum and the Philadelphia Antiques Show 2008
Loan Exhibit
Fore & Aft – Philadelphia Collects
Maritime features a never-before-seen
assemblage of maritime art and antiques culled
from public and private collections across
the region. Curator Craig Bruns will
tell the marvelous stories behind the unique
artifacts displayed in the Loan Exhibit and
the delights experienced in coming across
unforeseen finds.
Bruns' tales will
reveal insights into Philadelphia's
role as a principal port city, illuminate
how deeply the maritime world reaches into
our everyday world, and highlight the connections
between individual pieces across disparate
collections and how they come together into
a pleasantly surprising cohesive whole that
conveys the story of the Delaware River and
the people who lived and worked along it. |

Maritime Cruising with Diana Bittel and
Alan Granby |
Renowned antique
dealers Diana H. Bittel and Alan Granby, who
specialize in fine marine art and maritime
antiques, will share their devotion to maritime
culture and antiques.
Ms. Bittel of Diana H. Bittel Antiques specializes
in American marine watercolors; British sailors'
woolies of ships embroidered while at sea in
the 1850's; and sailors' shell Valentines,
elaborate tokens of love fashioned with tiny
seashells. Her presentation will be interactive,
affording attendees the opportunity to experience
the texture of objects and see the intricacy
of the materials. Ms. Bittel is widely published
in fine arts periodicals.
Alan Granby of Hyland Granby Antiques, an
avid collector of beautiful things, will discuss
his offerings of nautical artifacts including
navigational instruments, ship models, and
scrimshaw. Mr. Granby brings to the Philadelphia
Antiques Show museum-quality 18th and 19th
century maritime/marine antiques and paintings.
His extensive knowledge is sought after by
both private collectors and institutions. Among
his many publications, Alan Granby is the author
of "A Yachtsman's Eye" and
with his wife Janice Hyland has produced and
edited "Maritime
Maverick: The Collection of William I. Koch."
Ms. Bittel and Mr. Granby share an exacting interest
in the history and significance of each maritime
object as a work of art. While their collections
are masterpieces they believe antiques are to
be enjoyed as part of their existence. Listen
to these internationally known dealers and collectors
as they enrich your knowledge and excite your
senses to the wonders of magnificent maritime
artifacts and antiques. |
